The way to the first page on the organic search results, start on the design phase. You need to choose the phrases that you are going to write your content on and you want to check the competition on these phrases.
In the following post I’m going to show you the best FREE SEO competition analysis tool.
Traffic Travis is free SEO and PPC software. This software have SEO Analysis module. In this module you enter the phrase you want to analyze, choose the search location (for example: United States) and click on the “Analyze” button.
After few seconds you will get the difficulty rating of this phrase + the following info (all in graphical interface):
PR = Google page rank
BL = Number of back links for this page
BLS = Number of back links for whole site.
TBL = Number of back links for this site from edu and gov domains.
DMOZ = Showing if this domain listed in DMOZ
YAHD = Showing if this domain listed in Yahoo directory
Title = Showing if the title on the page contains the phrased you entered.
Desc = Showing if the Meta description on the page contains the phrased you entered.
H1 Tag = Showing if the H1 tag on the page contains the phrased you entered.
GCA = age in days of Google cached version of this page.
CEXT = Number of sites linking to domain from country (tld) of initial search.

Traffic Travis is a great tool that I’m using a lot. Before writing any article I’m using Google adwords keyword tool in order to check potential phrases and then I’m check the competition using the SEO Analysis module of traffic travis.

What is your experience using this tool? can I take any keyword that traffic travis evaluates as “easy to rank” and write articles hoping to reach top 10 results?

On cases that traffic Travis rank keyword as “Easy” – good article with good content, that written according to the on page SEO rules and uploaded to one of the major article directories that have high page rank (like ezinearticles, Squidoo, hubpages…) will bring you to the top 10 results.
